About the Course

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have the primary responsibility of engaging the customer, maintaining daily store operations and delivering on organisational expectations. They have sound knowledge of product and service offerings. These individuals possess a range of well-developed skills where discretion and judgement is required. They work with some independence under limited supervision. Some individuals working at this level are responsible for supervising other team members and monitoring day-to-day workplace operations.

The qualification provides a pathway to work in a diverse range of retail settings including specialty retailers, supermarkets, department stores and quick service restaurants.

Individuals with this qualification are able to perform roles such as frontline sales assistant, customer service representative, shop assistant, retail supervisor, team leader and senior sales assistant.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Available as a traineeship

This course is targeted to people who have access to workplaces which will provide experiences and learning to support the agreed units for the qualification.

TAFE at School (TVET)

TAFE Western offers many face to face and flexible TVET courses giving you the option of gaining a vocational qualification whilst you are at school. A TVET qualification can count towards your HSC, and 74.8% of TAFE graduates move into employment upon completion of their vocational qualifications. TVET is a great way to gain some practical skills in an adult learning environment, and the skills and experience you learn could also count towards your next qualification.

School Trainee

This course is targeted to people who have access to a combination of school, part time employment and vocational study.

All training will be conducted in the workplace and supported by:

  • learning resources provided by TAFE Western
  • standard operating procedures and work instructions available in the workplace
  • equipment provided in the workplace

Students undertaking employment based learning will have access to TAFE facilities and support including:

  • Student HUB, library facilities and Education Support Officers to support research and independent learning activities
  • TAFE Counsellors, Aboriginal Community Consultants and Disability Support Services

How will I study?

This face to face delivery is targeted to those who wish to attend a campus and receive tuition in a classroom. The target group may include school leavers, those wishing to return to the workplace and those who have retail experience but no formal qualifications. To complete the course within the given timeframes, all learners will be required to work through a pre-planned schedule. Learners will be required to demonstrate practical components of the course either in a real retail work environment or in a simulated retail environment at Orange Campus.

This program includes activities which are to be completed in your own time.

When will I study?

Class attendance is Part time

Tuesday 9:30am - 4:00pm over two TAFE semesters.

Course length: 6 hours per week for 1 Year

Start Date: 15 October 2018
End Date: 14 October 2019

What will I pay?

The amount you pay will depend on your individual circumstances.

TAFE NSW Government-subsidised fee (for eligible students): Up to $1,750.00 per course (GST free).

The fee that is displayed is the price for a student completing their second qualification and meeting eligibility criteria. The fee you pay may be lower depending on your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, a concession or an exemption. In some cases there are limited government subsidised places available.
