About the Course

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who have a defined and limited range of tourism operational skills and basic industry knowledge. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks and work under direct supervision.

This qualification provides a pathway to work in many tourism and travel industry sectors and for a diverse range of employers including travel agencies, tour wholesalers, tour operators, attractions, cultural and heritage sites, and any small tourism business.

Work could be undertaken in an office environment where the planning of tourism and travel products and services takes place, in the field where products are delivered, or a combination of both.

Possible job titles include:
- documentation clerk for a tour wholesaler or travel agency
- museum attendant
- office assistant for a tour operator
- receptionist and office assistant for a professional conference organiser or event management business
- receptionist and office assistant in a travel agency
- retail sales assistant in an attraction
- ride attendant in an attraction.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

NSW Skills List

Available as a traineeship

This course is targeted to people who have access to workplaces which will provide experiences and learning to support the agreed units for the qualification.

TAFE at School (TVET)

TAFE Western offers many face to face and flexible TVET courses giving you the option of gaining a vocational qualification whilst you are at school. A TVET qualification can count towards your HSC, and 74.8% of TAFE graduates move into employment upon completion of their vocational qualifications. TVET is a great way to gain some practical skills in an adult learning environment, and the skills and experience you learn could also count towards your next qualification.

School Trainee

This course is targeted to people who have access to a combination of school, part time employment and vocational study.

All training will be conducted in the workplace and supported by:

  • learning resources provided by TAFE Western
  • standard operating procedures and work instructions available in the workplace
  • equipment provided in the workplace

Students undertaking employment based learning will have access to TAFE facilities and support including:

  • Student HUB, library facilities and Education Support Officers to support research and independent learning activities
  • TAFE Counsellors, Aboriginal Community Consultants and Disability Support Services

This qualification provides a pathway to work in the tourism industry sales and operational departments, visitor information sector, also sales and product development area.

Studying at a TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centre means that you don’t have to leave your local community to get a first rate education and access elite training, teachers and support services.

Connected Learning Centres are custom designed to utilise modern technologies, simulations and virtual reality experiences to offer you a wider range of choices, more accessible, practical training and flexible learning opportunities. Students can access work booths, group learning rooms, a computer hub, print shop, tech-bar, media lounge, and learning support centre and a creative space to work on ideas for the future.

Our Connected Learning Centres will equip you with the skills you need for the jobs you want - in regional NSW, or anywhere in the world. If you would like to explore your local Connected Learning Centre, please visit www.tafensw.edu.au/clc.

Course content is delivered by Blended/Flexible delivery, using a combination of electronic and print based resources. You will be required to attend a 3 hour video conference session each week. Your teacher will provide you with additional support via phone or email. This program includes activities which are to be completed in your own time.

While there are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. TAFE West conditions of entry require students to show a willingness to participate in an online study environment and an ability to work independently.

Class attendance is Part time

Attendance is at TAFE NSW Bourke, Connected Learning Centre, 48 Oxley Street.

Course length: 3 hours per week for 18 Weeks

Start Date: 18 February 2019
End Date: 29 July 2019

What will I pay?

A course materials charge of $150 is applicable to this course. This fee provides you with essential course resources, for use as a reference guide during and after the course.

The amount you pay will depend on your individual circumstances.

TAFE NSW Government-subsidised fee (for eligible students): Up to $1,050.00 per course (GST free).

The fee that is displayed is the price for a student completing their second qualification and meeting eligibility criteria. The fee you pay may be lower depending on your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, a concession or an exemption. In some cases there are limited government subsidised places available.

Please contact your nearest TAFE Western campus or call us on 1300 823 393 for a personal fee assessment and to find out if you are eligible for a government subsidised place. If you do not gain a subsidised place you may be able to enrol and pay the non-government subsidised fee.

A payment must be made towards your course fee (if applicable) at the time you enrol or your place in the class will not be confirmed and you will not be able to access any of your learning resources.
