Engineering - Mechanical Trade

About the Course

This course is for people employed as apprentice mechanical fitters and machinists in the manufacturing, engineering and related industry areas. You will gain the competencies required to work as a mechanical tradesperson in
these areas.

You will acquire skills and knowledge in workplace communication, occupational health and safety, quality procedures, systems and planning, engineering measurement, computations and computer technology plus some industry-specific skills in mechanical fitting and machining that are relevant to your current or intended employment.

The course duration will vary depending on the training pathway agreed to between you, your employer and the TAFE college.

Available as an apprenticeship

On-campus learning of theoretical content will be supplemented with workplace experiences. Students will have access to workplaces which can provide experiences and learning to support the agreed units for the qualification. (for apprentices)

OR

It is envisaged that the workplace will be able to provide relevant experiences to support the classroom delivery.

TAFE at School (TVET)

TAFE Western offers many face to face and flexible TVET courses giving you the option of gaining a vocational qualification whilst you are at school. A TVET qualification can count towards your HSC, and 74.8% of TAFE graduates move into employment upon completion of their vocational qualifications. TVET is a great way to gain some practical skills in an adult learning environment, and the skills and experience you learn could also count towards your next qualification.

School Trainee

This course is targeted to people who have access to a combination of school, part time employment and vocational study.

All training will be conducted in the workplace and supported by:

  • learning resources provided by TAFE Western
  • standard operating procedures and work instructions available in the workplace
  • equipment provided in the workplace

Students undertaking employment based learning will have access to TAFE facilities and support including:

  • Student HUB, library facilities and Education Support Officers to support research and independent learning activities
  • TAFE Counsellors, Aboriginal Community Consultants and Disability Support Services

Where can I study?

Entry Requirements

There is no qualification entry requirement. It is assumed that the learner is engaged as an apprentice under a Training Contract and that the learner is receiving appropriate structured on-the-job training while undertaking this
qualification.

Further Study

Career Opportunities

Students may enter this course directly. They would normally be expected to be in, or seeking, relevant employment. They may proceed to higher level qualifications within this training package as explained in Section 7.1.

If students have undertaken this qualification with the support of their employer it would be expected they be employed in positions at AQF III (Level C10 in the Metal, Engineering and Associated Industries Award) in the workplace.

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry.

Credit may be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed MEM10105 Certificate I in Engineering, MEM10205 Certificate I in Boating Services, MEM20105 Certificate II in Engineering, MEM20205 Certificate II in Engineering - Production Technology or other relevant qualifications. Credit towards this qualification may also include units of competency contained within relevant skill sets and Statements of Attainment.

- PPE is to be supplied by the student including: safety glasses and hearing protection (all items must meet Australian standards)
- Clothing requirements: long sleeve cotton shirt and pants (cotton drill type) and work boots

This program includes activities which are to be completed in your own time.

When will I study?

Class attendance is Part time

Attendance is day release 8:00am until 4:30pm. An attendance calendar is supplied to all apprentices.

Course length: 8 hours per week for 30 Weeks

Start Date: 4 February 2019
End Date: 12 December 2022

What will I pay?

The amount you pay will depend on your individual circumstances.

TAFE NSW Government-subsidised fee (for eligible students): Up to $3,220.00 per course (GST free).

The fee that is displayed is the price for a student completing their second qualification and meeting eligibility criteria. The fee you pay may be lower depending on your personal circumstances and eligibility for a subsidised place, a concession or an exemption. In some cases there are limited government subsidised places available.

Delivery Location: Orange College, March Street Campus

This course is for Apprentices employed in the Fitting and Machining Trade.
