TAFE Western won a host of prizes, including the highest accolade of the event, at the 2010 TAFE NSW Quality Awards, which were held at Mount Panorama in Bathurst last week.
The 2010 Quality Project of the Year was presented to TAFE Western for a program which, in partnership with the Greater Western Area Health Service, is increasing the educational and employment outcomes for Aboriginal people working in health in central and western NSW.
Highlights of this program include that: enrolments in Aboriginal Health Work courses have increased by 480% in the last two years; more than 80% of students have successfully completed their course; and that the trained workers have remain in Health where they are making significant contributions to their workplaces and communities.
Other wins for TAFE Western were:
TAFE Western, for its Fast Track Hairdressing Apprenticeships program
TAFE NSW Training and Education Support in partnership with TAFE Western, for the Education for Sustainability Teacher and Student Induction programs
TAFE Western, for its ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow' initiative in partnership with the Greater Western Area Health Service to train Aboriginal Health Workers
As part of the event, 52 entries were assessed for seven award categories. A further 74 teams took the opportunity to showcase their initiative as part of awards expo.
Ms Kate Baxter, TAFE Western Institute Director said the awards were a great opportunity to celebrate the excellent outcomes being achieved by TAFE NSW.
"The Awards are a fantastic opportunity for us to gather together as an organisation; celebrate our achievements and successes; and learn from each other about the great work that is done throughout TAFE NSW."
"I am proud of TAFE Western and impressed by our achievements," she said. "I am inspired by the imagination and determination of the staff of TAFE NSW and I am pleased to have had the opportunity to acknowledge their responsiveness, flexibility and innovation."
More than 700 TAFE staff, including teams from every Institute in NSW attended the Quality Awards in Bathurst.
The Awards are held every second year to enhance organisational learning by showcasing projects that demonstrate significant improvement to, and support for, the quality of teaching and learning in TAFE NSW.
