Eight Aboriginal students from the Dubbo region will graduate with an Aboriginal Education Support School Based Trainee certificate at a special presentation on Wednesday, November 25.
Head Teacher Education Support Shane Kilby said the TAFE Western students had just completed a new and exciting pilot program that saw them spend 100 days working and training at a number of local primary schools in the region.
“It was fantastic to see the development in the students – seeing them transform from shy trainees into happy, confident adults,” she said.
“The students were a great help to the teachers in the classroom and the children really enjoyed having them there for support.”
The graduating students include: Tahlia Arrowsmith (Coonamble High School), Brittney Bayliss (Narromine High School), Demi Cain (Coonabarabran High School), Courtney Cubby (Coonamble High School), Danielle Kaperonis (Binnaway Central School), Chelsea Ribaux (Nyngan High School), Ashley Thomas (Dubbo Senior College) and Shyann Wilson (Nyngan High School).
All of the graduating students agreed the course was extremely beneficial.
Tahlia Arrowsmith, who helped at Coonamble Primary School, enjoyed building relationships with teachers and building friendships at the school, while the other students loved working with and supporting the children.
Ms Kilby said trainees who had successfully completed the school based traineeship may choose to go on to a Certificate IV Education Support, which had the potential to open up many avenues for employment/further training including working in schools as a School Learning Support Officer or Education Support Officer.
The Aboriginal Education Support School Based Trainee certificate was a joint partnership, with TAFE Western, Department of Education and Communities, State Training Services, Elsa Dixon Funding, Way Ahead Program, Western Student Connections, Access Group Training and Indigenous Youth Careers Program, all vital in the success of the pilot program.
The graduation will be held at TAFE Western Dubbo College’s Student Hub, from 11.30am on Wednesday, November 18. All family, friends and media are invited to come along to this event.
