TAFE Western’s state-of-the-art online and blended delivery strategies have received international praise after a five-day masterclass at Hunan University in Loudi, China, was hailed a resounding success.
TAFE Western Educational Leader New Learning Technologies Fiona Watts delivered the Online and Blended Delivery masterclass, helping equip participants with exciting new strategies that they can introduce into their teaching techniques in their country.
“Our delivery model is very different to China’s. Their current delivery consists of a lot of lectures, exams and essays whereas TAFE Western has a more flexible, industry and student focused, style of delivery,” Mrs Watts said.
“This masterclass helped provide a foundation for participants to grow their online and blended delivery strategies in new and innovative ways,” Mrs Watts said.
The Online and Blended Delivery masterclass focused on five key areas:
“Participants enjoyed the interactive nature of the training and the ability to log into a live online course for their learning,” Mrs Watts said.
“It gave them the opportunity to better understand both the process and the completed product. It was highly participatory and focused on developing skills to put the student at the centre of the learning.”
Mrs Watts revealed more than 60 participants attended the masterclass each day, and the feedback received was really positive.
“Participants were invited to provide feedback about their experiences and 100 per cent of respondents said the program had achieved its aims,” Mrs Watts said.
“I was only the second ever Australian to deliver a presentation at Hunan University and all of the participants were exceptionally welcoming.
“It was both personally and professionally one of the most rewarding experiences. It was my first visit to China and gave me the opportunity to deliver through interpreters in another language.
“It forced me to really think about how to explain TAFE Western’s approach to the teaching and learning process in a clear and concise way; particularly in the online environment.
“I feel that relationships were further strengthened between TAFE Western and Hunan University and that will hopefully lead to further training and education opportunities in the future.”
