Growing up in a large family and wanting to give her young son the best start in life drove Sharna Wood’s decision to pursue an exciting career working with children.
Ms Wood was able to develop her skills by completing a Certificate III and then a Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE NSW Orange, all while juggling two separate jobs and looking after her son Bailey.
This training, and the subsequent skills she developed, resulted in employment at The Willows Preschol & Early Learning Centre, a dream result for Sharna and her family.
“Nurturing children has always been an interest of mine and after my son Bailey arrived, I wanted to learn all that I could to care for him and other children,” Ms Wood said.
“I started studying a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care on campus at TAFE NSW when my son was a baby. When Bailey was a little older, I went on to complete the Diploma through TAFE Digital.
“With TAFE NSW’s innovative flexible learning options, I was able to study when it was convenient for me as opposed to attending set classes. The highly skilled and knowledgeable staff were a fantastic help, only being an email or phone call away if I needed help.”
Educational Leader of The Willows Preschool & Early Learning Centre, Alex Halls, said: “Sharna has proven to be an exceptional educator and team member, guiding children expertly with kindness and compassion and adding great value to the education and care we provide.”
TAFE NSW Child and Family Services teacher, Lana Brown, complimented Sharna on her commitment.
“Sharna was a diligent and positive student who remained focused during her studies. What she was able to achieve, all while working and being a young mum of a toddler was a real achievement,” she said.
It’s not too late to enrol in an early childhood and care course at TAFE NSW in 2018. For more information visit www.tafensw.edu.au/courses or call 131 601.
