As part of these initiatives the team has replaced plants which were heavily dependant on water with drought tolerant natives and reduced the areas of lawn requiring watering.
The team also installed water saving, automated irrigation systems which use the minimum amount of water to maintain the sub-soil moisture level and reduce the levels of evaporation.
According to Acting Institute Director,
“Environmental responsibility and sustainable practices are embedded into our training so that students in this region take these skills into their workplaces,” he said.
“We are not just teaching these priorities to others but we take seriously our obligations to demonstrate and implement sustainable practices in our own operation.”
Mr Thomas outlined that the Institute’s strategic plan includes significant goals in relation to efficient energy use, recycling, decreasing waste, ecological sustainable design of infrastructure and increasing the biodiversity of campuses though the use of plants indigenous to their areas.
