Youth Mental Health First Aid

About the Course

This course helps participants learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of
mental health problems. Participants will also learn where and how to get
help, and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective.

Like other first aid courses this course does not train people to diagnose or
treat health problems. Instead, it provides strategies to help young people in
mental health crisis situations and/or going through the early stages of
mental health problems.

The course covers the following crisis situations:
- suicidal behaviours
- self-harm
- acute stress reaction
- panic attacks
- acute psychotic behaviour.

The course also covers the following mental health problems:
- depression
- anxiety disorders
- psychosis
- substance use disorders
- eating disorders.
