BIG SUCCESS: Lightning Ridge Community Customer Support Officer Donna Lund shows off TAFE Western's offerings at the Opal Festival.
TAFE Western’s first ever information stand at the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival has been a big hit with local residents and visitors alike.
Lightning Ridge Community Customer Support Officer Donna Lund said interest was so high that TAFE Western will start a new two-day Introduction to Opal Cutting Course soon.
“First and foremost the focus of the stand was to make locals and visitors aware of the services TAFE Western can provide in Lightning Ridge and that we have lots of great courses to offer,” Mrs Lund said.
“But because the opal industry is experiencing a real resurgence, interest was particularly high in our new Introduction to Opal Cutting Course which is very exciting.
“The Opal Festival is the premier event in our small town and it was great to have such a positive response from the community.”
Mrs Lund said it wasn’t just the Opal Cutting Course that was popular, with a number of courses including a beginner computer course and Certificate II in Automotive also creating interest.
Director of TAFE Western’s Business Capability Unit Brad Polak reported it wasn’t just the locals eager to learn more about TAFE Western’s services, with visitors from all over the world taking notice.
“It was great to get amongst the close-knit community of Lightning Ridge but it was also very pleasing to promote our customised services to visitors from Sydney, Melbourne and even America,” Mr Polak said.
“Further discussions are underway with local businesses to develop tailor-made programs that will bring business to the Lightning Ridge community and the local TAFE Western College.”
