TAFE Western College Team Leader for Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Menindee Byron Hooker believes the construction of a new building for Wilcannia is a huge and necessary investment for the remote community.
Mr Hooker said the new 21.4 metre building would be delivered by September 28 and will replace the two current demountable buildings owned by the Department of Education.
“The old buildings were run down and not great learning environments. The new facility will allow TAFE Western to further develop a strong base in the community and best utilise the amazing technology that we have available to enhance learning opportunities for our students,” Mr Hooker said.
“The arrival of this new building is very exciting. It’s custom designed and fits in with TAFE Western’s strategy to create an easily accessible Student Hub for all students.
“It will also create some fantastic opportunities for the community to get involved in a number of unique, hands-on courses to help complete the landscaping of the new area.
“This is a fresh start for Wilcannia and I hope the community embraces the opportunities it will provide.”
Mr Hooker said the new building complemented the recent arrival of Wilcannia Customer and Community Support Officer Virgean Wilson, who brings a wealth of community knowledge to the position.
“I am a proud Aboriginal Woman and I belong to the Bakandji Nation of Wilcannia,” Ms Wilson said.
“I was born and raised in Wilcannia, which means that I am very knowledgeable and caring about my community and surrounding district.
“In this role I hope to offer more to my community through education, enabling more people to gain a broad range of knowledge in different sectors which can lead to employment.
“Since I started in August, I have enjoyed meeting new people and being a part of a network that provides great experiences and successful outcomes for greater determinations.”
TAFE Western Wilcannia College will hold a meet and greet event with Ms Wilson on September 18 at 10.30am. The community are invited and encouraged to come along and discuss the new building and all the fantastic courses that are available at Wilcannia.
