BIG HELP: Debbie Nelson accepts a $1,000 scholarship from Macquarie Credit Union General Manager Matthew Bow.
Thanks to the generosity of Macquarie Credit Union and TAFE Western, Debbie Nelson from Dubbo believes her dream of one day working in the community services sector is now a distinct possibility.
Ms Nelson was presented with a $1,000 scholarship from Macquarie Credit Union General Manager Matthew Bow, financial support which she says will make a huge difference in her education and training journey.
“This scholarship will help me and my family immensely with travel to TAFE and expenses of stationery and text books along the way,” she said. “On a tight budget it’s not always easy to find the extra money every week for these supplies.
“I applied for this scholarship with the thought that I wouldn’t get it, so to receive the offer was a huge surprise. I’m very grateful to Macquarie Credit Union and TAFE Western for such a generous offer.”
Ms Nelson has been studying at TAFE Western for six months, completing a Certificate III in Community Services. She loved the experience so much, she’s also enrolled for further study - a Diploma of Community Services at TAFE Western and a pathways degree at Charles Sturt University.
“Studying at TAFE after 16 years of being a stay at home mum of four children has restored my confidence and is enabling me to become independent again,” she said.
“The teachers at TAFE Western have been brilliant and I look forward to attending TAFE every week. So far it has been very enjoyable and I’ve met some awesome people along the way.
“My main focus now is to complete my study, giving me a Diploma and a Bachelor Degree in social work. My dream job would be to work with corrections, or with youth or disability services.”
Mr Bow said he was thrilled to see the scholarship program making such a difference for students, allowing them to complete their studies and achieve success in their chosen careers.
TAFE Western project officer Jo Sedgers paid tribute to Macquarie Credit Union for their continued support.
“TAFE Western is delighted to partner with local business to support our students,” Ms Sedgers said.
“Through their generous donation of student scholarships, Macquarie Credit Union is actively increasing the access of local people to local training opportunities and that has to be good for our local communities.”
