Inspiring Indigenous advocate Dale Wright is back on his bike for “The Red Dust Tour” and will cover nearly 1000 kilometres to start a conversation with schoolchildren about Aboriginal health and reconciliation.
In its sixth year, the Tour Da Country bike ride will kick off on Tuesday, 10 October in Walgett and stop along the way at TAFE NSW Cobar on Friday, 13 October about 12 noon after riding 162km from Bourke that morning.
As a proud supporter of the Tour Da Country, TAFE NSW Cobar will provide the facilities for Mr Wright to talk with local Indigenous schoolchildren about the importance of maintaining good health and reconciliation.
Mr Wright had health issues as a young adult, but has taken control of his well-being. He is now an Aboriginal Health Worker and hard-working advocate for Aboriginal communities throughout regional NSW.
“We focus on the important health messages within smaller communities with a high proportion of Aboriginal people,” Mr Wright said. “Talking to schoolchildren gives us an opportunity to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and talk to the mob about our journey, the importance of health and fitness. We use traditional Aboriginal games as a way of engaging the children.
“Personally, it’s hard for me to tell my story, but it’s harder not to tell it. I’m training for life ’cos I’m sick of going to funerals.”
The Tour Da Country partners with the Roads and Maritime Services to promote road safety and the relationship between the cyclist and motorist.
“We strongly advocate for the importance and respect of shared road safety,” he said. “The kids get a deadly new helmet and feel pride in their culture.”
The Tour Da Country brings together riders with vastly different backgrounds, career choices and lives. The route this year will include Broken Hill, Brewarrina, Wilcannia and Menindee. The team of riders meet with Aboriginal Medical Services, Local Aboriginal Land Councils, Medicare, locals, schools, and juvenile justice detention centres.
