TAFE Western Lightning Ridge College was a hive of activity last week as 20 people from across NSW came to the region to complete a two day Opal Cutting Course.
Lightning Ridge Community Customer Support Officer Donna Lund said the course was so popular TAFE Western had to hold separate two day classes to cater for interested participants.
“We promoted this course at the recent Lightning Ridge Opal Festival and the interest was overwhelming – so much so we couldn’t fit everyone in one class,” she said.
“The best part was we had people travel from as far away as Goondiwindi, Pelican, Lismore and Coffs Harbour to take part in the course - a great thing for Lightning Ridge because they stayed and invested in our community.”
Mrs Lund said the two day beginner course focused on teaching participants how to use tools and equipment, perform basic pre-cutting operations and the skills needed to cut and polish rough opals.
“The feedback we received from those in the class was really positive. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt lots of great skills from teacher Melissa Jones,” Mrs Lund said.
“Thanks to their interest and feedback, TAFE Western Lightning Ridge College hopes to hold Opal Carving and Jewellery Making courses in 2016, as well as more two day Opal Cutting classes.”
