Highly regarded Hill End artist Rebecca Wilson’s exhibition Kate Kelly; Sister of an Outlaw is currently on display at TAFE Western’s March Street Orange College.
While most of the fame has surrounded arguably Australia’s most famous outlaw Ned Kelly, Ms Wilson has spent years researching Kate’s life, bringing Ned’s sister out of his shadow in this colourful art exhibition.
“What I aimed to do was to bring a female perspective to the female side of the male legend, but most importantly a unique body of work to tell Kate’s story as my own,” Ms Wilson said.
“I wanted to represent Kate as being more than a black and white character, she was a real woman and there was nothing black and white about the Kellys - so this exhibition is full of colour.”
The Kate Kelly; Sister of an Outlaw exhibition is showing until September 18, with a special artist’s talk and tour to be held on Sunday, September 6 from 2-4pm at the B Block Gallery. Everyone is invited to attend.
After exhibiting in Orange, Ms Wilson will take Kate Kelly; Sister of an Outlaw to Forbes where it will be on display at Mezzanine Café Gallery from September 21 to October 31 as part of the biennial Kalari-Lachlan River Arts Festival which starts on October 30.
Ms Wilson, who is also an art teacher at TAFE Western, said the exhibition was the perfect tool to encourage prospective students and art enthusiasts to come along and check out TAFE Western’s art facilities.
“As we draw closer to the end of the year, now’s the perfect time for the region’s school leavers and budding artists to consider furthering their studies with TAFE Western,” she said.
“TAFE Western offers great Visual Arts Programs and it’s a pleasure to be showing Kate Kelly here at the B Block Gallery, as the show travels across regional NSW and Victoria.”
