Studying floristry at TAFE NSW Orange started out as a fun past time for student Kalea Blowes, but has blossomed into so much more after she enjoyed huge success at the Flower Growers Group of NSW Scholarship Competition at the Flower Markets in Sydney.
Kalea was one of four students from across NSW to win a $2,500 scholarship to put towards further training and education, with her mystery box floristry display catching the eyes of the judges.
“I started just doing floristry as a hobby, but who knows – maybe one day I would love to own my own little floristry shop,” Ms Blowes said.
“I was very excited when I found out that I had won. I really didn’t think anything would come from entering the competition, I just thought what have I got to lose, it will be a great experience and I get to create something with a box of beautiful blooms and visit the flower markets.
“Winning this award was very exciting and gives me a lot more confidence in my abilities, and excited for my future endeavours.”
TAFE NSW Floristry Teacher Sarah Cox described Kalea as very talented, and a great example that TAFE NSW can deliver exciting opportunities for students.
“Kalea is a very creative and talented student – I believe she has the ability to be very successful in the floristry industry,” Ms Cox said.
“Kalea is the third student in as many years studying at TAFE NSW Orange to successfully win one of these scholarships.
“This demonstrates that the students at TAFE NSW are learning skills that are recognised and highly regarded right across the country, which can lead to not only award success but ultimately exciting employment opportunities.”
