The Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program last night received state-wide recognition for excellence at the prestigious Premier’s Awards for Public Service.
IPROWD won the Building Stronger and Safer Communities Award, with IPROWD Coordinator Peter Gibbs and TAFE Western Institute Director Kate Baxter on hand to accept the award from NSW Premier Mike Baird.
“This award is recognition for an extremely valuable program that continues to change the lives of hundreds of Aboriginal peoples not only in Dubbo, but right across NSW,” a delighted Mr Gibbs said.
“The Australian Government recently acknowledged the program’s worth with a $2.5 million investment and for the NSW Premier to select us from a quality field for this award, just enhances the belief that IPROWD is making a huge difference in our local communities.”
NSW Premier Mike Baird congratulated the winners. “These awards recognise the achievements of staff in the public service and their commitment to delivering quality customer services.”
“Each of the finalists has demonstrated their dedication to providing exceptional levels of service and innovation.”
Mr Gibbs said IPROWD was a joint initiative and thanked the NSW Police Force, Charles Sturt University, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Aboriginal Housing Office and Aboriginal Education Consultative Group for their continued support.
Since the IPROWD program started in 2008, over 500 students have enrolled. More than 70 have gone on to gain employment with NSW Police and a further 150 have secured other forms of employment.
Ms Baxter said IPROWD’s success in the Premier’s Awards was well deserved.
“I’m incredibly proud that TAFE Western has been, and continues to be, an enthusiastic supporter of IPROWD,” she said. “At TAFE Western we pride ourselves on helping bridge the gap in the disadvantage Aboriginal peoples face when it comes to education and employment.
“We are committed to providing knowledge, skills and career pathways for Aboriginal peoples and IPROWD is just one of a number of programs, courses and ways TAFE Western is offering life-changing opportunities of education and training.”
TAFE Western was also proud to be a finalist in the Providing Better Support and Opportunities category for the Building Skills, Building Schools project in Bourke.
