After having children and working part-time in a doctor’s surgery, Carcoar’s Christine Bright knew she wanted to pursue her passion of becoming a nurse.
Ms Bright was aware of the shortage of trained nurses in the region and thanks to the skills and practical experience she gained while studying a Diploma of Nursing at TAFE NSW Orange, she has successfully secured her dream job as an Enrolled Nurse at Blayney Hospital.
“I always wanted to be qualified in something but I left school early and thought I didn’t have the knowledge or study skills to go to TAFE or university,” she said.
“TAFE NSW is the perfect starting point for people of all levels, the teachers are supportive and will go out of their way to help you.
“I will never forget the practical skills I learnt from my rural placement at Bourke Hospital where I played an integral role in the delivery of a baby. Because it was a smaller hospital, I was able to spend a lot of time with a nurse assisting with patients - opportunities you wouldn’t get at larger hospitals.
“I enjoyed learning so much I am now nearly half-way through a Bachelor of Nursing at university in Bathurst and I would not have got to this point without the help of TAFE NSW.”
Nursing Manager at Blayney Hospital, Deborah Higgs, said Christine was becoming a brilliant nurse and a pleasure to work with.
“Her TAFE NSW studies have given her confidence and her patients are always the centre of her care. She is a wonderful advocate for her patients,” she said.
“Christine has also developed the skills to question other people’s actions and opinions towards her patients to make sure they are receiving the best quality care.”
TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Nursing and Health, Sara Morgan, said Christine was an inspiration to other students.
“She embraced all clinical placements and is the perfect example of students coming to TAFE NSW to launch their careers and to be employed in a job they love,” she said.
Enrolments are now open for semester two at TAFE NSW. For information visit www.tafensw.edu.au or phone 131 601.
