Chinese trip excites TAFE Western nursing students
Ten TAFE Western Diploma of Enrolled Nursing students from Orange, Dubbo, Cowra and other small western NSW towns will jet off to China on Friday (May 13) for the learning experience of a lifetime.
As part of TAFE Western’s unique Outbound Mobility Program, the students will travel overseas to take up residency at two of China’s leading hospitals, immersing themselves in Chinese culture while learning vital skills they can introduce into their every day practices in Australia.
“We have a group WeChat (Chinese messaging App) and it’s fair to say the students are incredibly excited,” TAFE Western Nursing and Health Head Teacher Debbie Greenhalgh, who will accompany the students on the trip, said.
“A lot of the participants have never been outside the state let alone the country so it’ll be an amazing experience for them to not only see China’s culture, but to also get a first-hand look at their very different nursing techniques.”
TAFE’s 10 students will be split into groups of five. Each group will alternate five-day placements at Shanghai Redleaf Women’s Hospital and American-Sino Obstetrician, Gynecology and Pediatrics Services.
“It will be a great opportunity for these students to get a good insight into healthcare delivery in China, with important exposure to cultural influences on pre and post natal care and childbirth,” Mrs Greenhalgh said.
“I have no doubt this experience will be a real eye-opener for the students. Working in such busy environments will greatly increase the confidence they have in their own abilities and will help them become better and more skilful nurses.”
This year’s participants include: Beth Thompson (Millthorpe); Courtney Walker (Dubbo); Hannah Piper (Mount David); Jessica Bourke (Rylstone); Kane Horan (Orange); Katrina Tonkin (Dubbo); Laura McKenna (Dubbo); Maddison McCahon (Dubbo); Sarah Drury (Windrayne) and Sharon White (Cowra).
During their downtime, the students plan on watching the Chinese Acrobats, taking Chinese cooking and calligraphy lessons, and taking tours of Shanghai.
“Amazing overseas learning opportunities are available by studying with TAFE western," Mrs Greenhalgh said.
