TAFE NSW - Western Institute, Lithgow Campus is now offering a new pre-vocational course for people wanting an introduction to the children's services industry. The seven week course will start in October and offers students an introduction into this field of work and the opportunity to decide if they would like to go on to study the Certificate III in Children's Services in 2008.
TAFE Teacher, Trudy Magus said "The Certificate III course equips students with the skills needed to work as a child care assistant in preschools, day care centres and mobile children's services, as well as a casual relief child carer in those services."
"The course was last run at Lithgow in 2006, and there have been some fantastic outcomes for students from that group. Some have actually gone on to further their studies at both TAFE and University and some others are now employed full time in the childcare industry."
"In the pre-vocational course we offer four subjects from the Certificate III course, so as well as finding out if this is the course for them, those students who choose to go on with children's services next year get a head start and will already have completed a part of the Certificate III course."
The prevocational course will run on Mondays, Tuesdays Wednesdays and Fridays for seven weeks, commencing October 15. Subjects covered include Support the Development of Children, Care for Children, Interact Effectively with Children and Ensure Children's Health and Safety.
Trudy concluded her comments by saying, "Because places are limited for the pre-vocational course, people should register their interest as soon as possible. They can visit the Lithgow Campus or call Jacki Risby on 6352 0469 or Patricia Keates on 6338 2404"
Applicants must have completed their School Certificate or equivalent, or be of mature age. The cost of the Prevocational Course is $164.00, however some applicants may be eligible for an exemption from Centrelink.
Applications for the Certificate III in Children's Services course, which starts in 2008, must be completed by 26 October , 2007. Application forms are available from the TAFE campus in Lithgow.
