Fitness is fun and important was the key message presented to more than 100 St Philomena’s Catholic Primary School students in Bathurst last week as TAFE Western’s Certificate IV Fitness students put their skills to the ultimate test.
TAFE Western Fitness Coordinator Rachel Cupitt said working with children was a key component of the Fitness course and the TAFE students put into practice what they had learnt throughout the 18-week course.
“The students are assessed on their ability to present a number of fun, nutritional activities to the children,” Mrs Cupitt said.
“Working with children and the elderly are important components of the fitness course and there’s nothing more challenging than working with 100 energetic and enthusiastic school children.”
Some of the fun activities presented on the day included ball games including football and soccer, tug of war, hula hoops, tiggy, snakes and ladders and more. There’s no doubt it was a big hit with the kids.
Year 1 student Andie said, “I really like the teachers because they have me running around and puffing me out.”
“I like being outside and running around, it’s really fun. I can’t wait to play stuck in the mud,” Year 1 student Hayden added.
While it was all fun and games for the kids, Mrs Cupitt said the underlying message was exercise and staying healthy was absolutely vital for everyone.
“Unfortunately chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and many more are becoming more prevalent among school children and the elderly which is why there’s such a big focus on those areas in this course,” she said.
“So not only are the fitness courses at TAFE Western helping people become personal trainers, they also equip participants with the skills and knowledge to work with children and the elderly to really make a difference in helping them change their lives from a health and fitness perspective.”
Mrs Cupitt said enrolments were now being sought for the 18-week Certificate III Fitness course to begin in February.
“If you are looking for the chance to change people’s lives with a career in Health and Fitness, enrol now,” she said.
