Gavin Press from Bathurst and representing Central West Group Apprentices won the Group Training Apprentice of the Year title at the Group Training National Awards Presentation Dinner in Adelaide last Friday.
Gavin completed his electrical apprenticeship with AJS Electrical in Bathurst and his Electrotechnology course at Dubbo TAFE College. He represented Australia at the 2009 International WorldSkills Competition in Canada.
The awards recognising Group Training's most outstanding apprentices and trainees were presented at a dinner which followed the Group Training Australia's National Conference ‘Skill2Work'. The two-day Conference brought together group training organisations that are part of the largest employer network of apprentices and trainees in Australia.
Gavin Press said, "Undertaking an apprenticeship has allowed me to start a continuous learning process with a broader skill base than first anticipated."
"On-the-job training has shown the day-to-day realism of the industry and given the practical skills needed to be successful, including maintaining good working relationships."
Gavin was identified as a potentially outstanding apprentice by his TAFE Teacher, David Arnold at Dubbo TAFE College and encouraged to participate in the WorldSkills competitions which led to Gavin becoming part of the Australian Team to complete in Canada last year.
TAFE Western Institute Director, Kate Baxter said, "I congratulate Gavin, his teachers and employers along with Central West Group Apprentices who play a vital role in helping to fill the skill shortages in this region."
"Gavin is a great role model for young people in Western NSW. He is an enthusiastic young man and has shown a great commitment and dedication to his trade.
Gavin has previously been named the Apprentice of the Year in the NSW Training Awards and was honoured in TAFE Western's Outstanding Graduating Student Awards in 2009.
