Five Orange and district Aboriginal students are demonstrating all the skills required to forge successful careers as civil workers at the Guanna Hill road improvement project between Orange and Molong.
That’s according to TAFE Western Civil Construction Teacher Scott Mitchell, who praised the students’ hard work ethic as a successful partnership between TAFE NSW, FK Gardner and Sons Group and Spinifex Recruiting continues to flourish.
“As part of this partnership, the students completed a Certificate II Resource and Infrastructure Work Preparation Course at TAFE and were given work placement with FK Gardner through Spinifex which opened the doors to these exciting employment opportunities,” Mr Mitchell said.
“Since completing their initial Certificate II, the students have each earned an apprenticeship and the opportunity to work on the Guanna Hill project. Since mid-August they have shown outstanding work skills, a hard work ethic and a commitment to learning and improving their skillset.”
This opinion was shared by everyone involved with the project at a special get together last week that included representatives from TAFE NSW, FK Gardner, Spinifex and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS).
“It was here the students were inducted into a Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations course at TAFE Western – where they will learn more important skills relating to their ongoing work at this project including ongoing safe work practices, machinery operation, general road construction and much more,” Mr Mitchell said.
Spinifex’s Damien O’Donnell said his organisation was thrilled to be involved in a project which was delivering real-life employment opportunities for local students.
“This has been a very positive project to be involved in,” Mr O’Donnell said. “In a short timeframe the students’ initial training has been completed, they have been inducted onto the project and have started working full-time hours.
“We are proud of the apprentices for grabbing this opportunity with both hands, in particular their can do attitude and ability to adjust quickly to the work conditions.”
